Bottom line
Jayden Daniels supplies the ceiling, but an injury cluster in both lines makes 7.5 difficult to trust

Market math and price discipline
DraftKings opened Washington at 7.5 with both sides -110. The Aug. 31 SI stamp keeps 7.5 at -105 / -115. The Under is no longer even money, and camp has damaged two position groups.
Kos Edge's 6.31 fair still points Under, but the Aug. 31 SI Under at -115 is juiced enough to kill the prior even-money lean. The injury cluster supports the Model direction without clearing the price. That is a Pass.
A healthy Daniels can still outperform a mean projection, and several lesser injuries could resolve before Week 1. The board already moved off the soft Under price that briefly cleared the desk.
Quick projection
Division outlook & profile
Washington's win total is a bet on recovery. Its camp has made recovery harder.
Jayden Daniels can still change the shape of a season. That is why a team coming off 5-12 is priced at 7.5, with the Over favored at -120. The Kos Edge Model is less forgiving at 6.31 expected wins, 1.19 below the market. The injury news now points in the same direction, but the right conclusion is a small Under at +100 or a Pass if that price disappears. Daniels' ceiling keeps confidence capped.
Schedule / path notes
The early schedule attacks the weak points
Washington opens with consecutive division road games at Philadelphia and Dallas. The Eagles can stress communication with motion and a deep defensive front. Dallas can force a depleted line to keep pace with a high-scoring offense.
The Commanders then host Seattle, travel to London for Indianapolis, return home for the Giants, and visit San Francisco on Monday night before a Week 7 bye. That is two division road games, an international trip, and a West Coast opponent in the first six. The early bye helps injured players, but it also means Washington must play 11 consecutive weeks to finish the regular season.
After the bye come Philadelphia, the Rams, a Thursday game at the Giants, and a Monday game against Cincinnati. The softer-looking stretch against Arizona, Tennessee, Atlanta, and Jacksonville arrives later, when accumulated line wear may matter more.
The season does not require Washington to dominate the opening block. It does require the Commanders to avoid a hole while Tunsil is absent and Allegretti is trying to establish center chemistry. A 2-4 start would leave the Over needing six wins in the final 11. Possible, but no bargain.
Betting angles to track
Betting Guide
- Win total 7.5: Pass. Model fair is 6.31, but Under -115 is no longer the even-money price that briefly cleared.
- Offensive-line checkpoint: Tunsil is a long-term loss; Allegretti's calf and the center rotation determine whether Washington can protect Daniels without redesigning the offense.
- Health checkpoint: White is managing a hamstring, Mariota is out for the rest of the preseason with an MCL sprain, and Newton is out for significant time after pectoral surgery.
- Schedule watch: Philadelphia-Dallas-Seattle-London-New York-San Francisco is a demanding first six before an early bye.
- Player production: Daniels and McLaurin can produce even in a sub-eight-win season. Team Under logic should not be copied mechanically into player totals.
Additional context
The line plan has already been rewritten
Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps during an Aug. 8 one-on-one period and underwent surgery. Washington expects him to miss significant time and hopes he can return during the season, but a typical recovery can extend four to seven months. The Commanders' highest-end offensive lineman is therefore a long-term absence, not a week-to-week camp precaution.
Brandon Coleman moves back to left tackle. He has starting experience there and played better at the position late last season, but the original plan was to use him in the guard competition. Moving him outside solves one problem by reopening another. Rookie Josh Conerly Jr. remains on the right side, leaving a young tackle pairing in front of the player who determines the franchise's range.
Center is no cleaner. Nick Allegretti strained his calf on the first day of camp, missed three weeks, returned briefly, and then left again with tightness. Imaging did not show a new structural setback, but Dan Quinn said on Aug. 24 that Allegretti was “not there yet.” He had participated in only two practices and was unlikely to join the Ravens joint session.
Washington released Tyler Biadasz in the offseason and planned to convert Allegretti, primarily a guard during his career, into the starter. Julian Good-Jones and rookie Matt Gulbin have taken much of the replacement work. That is a difficult place to be teaching continuity while the blind-side plan also changes.
The concern showed in Detroit. Daniels played only three snaps, as planned, but the first series ended in a three-and-out. Pressure arrived immediately through the middle on the first play, and Daniels took a 10-yard sack after edge pressure on the next pass. Three preseason snaps do not establish a season. They did display the exact failure mode behind the Under: protection loses early, the offense falls behind schedule, and Daniels has to solve structure with movement.
The injury cluster extends beyond Tunsil
The offense is also managing Rachaad White's hamstring. White returned in a limited capacity Monday, but the issue has reduced his late-camp work while Washington sorts a backfield that already lost Jerome Ford to injured reserve. White's status is not equivalent to Tunsil's; it is another layer of missed timing in a new offense.
Marcus Mariota sprained the MCL in his right knee during the preseason opener against Miami. He will miss the rest of the preseason, though the club expects him to be available for Week 1. The immediate effect is on contingency planning. Sam Hartman and Athan Kaliakmanis have handled the healthy backup work while Daniels' protection is unsettled. If Daniels misses time during the regular season, Washington needs Mariota's mobility and experience ready, not merely medically cleared.
The defensive line absorbed its own major loss. Jer'Zhan Newton underwent surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle and is expected to miss a significant period. He produced five sacks last season and was set to rotate across the base and nickel fronts. Tim Settle has also been working back from a Lisfranc injury, while Odafe Oweh has dealt with a calf strain.
That collection changes the team math. Tunsil and Allegretti affect the offense's ability to protect its best player. Newton affects the defense's ability to end drives without exposing the secondary. White and Mariota reduce skill-position and quarterback depth during the installation. The injuries are connected by lost margin, not by one neat replacement.
Daniels can still break the Under case
The bull case begins and ends with Daniels staying healthy. Washington saw the ceiling in 2024, when it went 12-5 and reached the NFC Championship Game. It saw the floor in 2025, when Daniels played only seven games through knee, hamstring, and elbow issues and the Commanders fell to 5-12.
David Blough now installs his first offense as coordinator. Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs give Daniels veteran route winners, and the quarterback's movement can erase protection mistakes that would kill a less mobile offense. If the passing game creates explosives and the defense rises from last year's bottom tier, eight wins is not a remote outcome.
That ceiling is why the Model's 6.31 does not justify high confidence. The 10th-to-90th percentile range runs from three to 10 wins. Washington has genuine right-tail outcomes because healthy elite quarterback play can swing close games. The Under thesis is not that Daniels lacks talent. It is that the roster now asks him to cover too many weak points for 17 games.

Model note
- Confidence
- **1/5**
- Key risk
- A healthy Daniels can erase protection mistakes, and Tunsil or other injured starters could return soon enough to lift Washington above the Model mean.
